Itinerary:

The North Georgia mountains may not be the Rockies (or the Himalayas), but they include many mtns that make for superb hikes and offer incredible views.  For this series, we are counting down the highest peaks in GA...

#11 - Horsetrough Mountain

Standing 4040' above sea level with 1008' of clean prominence, Horsetrough Mountain is south of Brasstown Bald, just off the AT about 4 miles south of Jacks Gap. We will start this hike at Unicoi Gap. Since sunset will be at 5:26 pm, we will hike at a fast pace.

The hike involves leaving the AT and bushwhacking for about a mile up to the summit of Horsetrough.  The terrain is easy with sparse ground vegetation, with the exception of about a quarter of a mile of blackberry briars on a portion of the ascent. Gators, goggles, and gardening gloves are the recommended fashion accessories for this portion of the hike, as well as kevlar pants and snag resistant long sleeves.

Weather permitting, we will see Brasstown Bald during our ascent, but the view of the top of Horsetrough is less than spectacular, as the summit is surrounded by trees.  That said, if you like bushwhacking, this is the hike for you!

If there is time, we may stop to see the headwaters of the Chattahoochee, which is just a little spring that trickles out of the ground. What an amazing sight to see the birthplace of the mighty river that flows through our state!

We will stop for dinner afterwards in Helen for those would like to join us.
