Itinerary:
Moderate 6 miles total in two hikes and fun and easy swimming at Chatooga River

After parking, the trail closeby, follows a well defined walkway in the Chatooga River National Scenic Wilderness, two miles down to the river right at the end of Section 4, below ‘Sockemdog’ rapids. From here we will follow Opussum Creek (flows into the river here) and walk up a little less than ½ mile to the dramatically beautiful 100’ Opussum Creek Falls. After this short hike we will return for a lunch break and people can do one of two things. There are a wide variety of wildflowers toward the bottom of the trail and around the bottomland of Opussum Creek and the walk up to the waterfall, for any wanting to take photographs at a leisurely pace. Others can enjoy swimming/ wading/ sunbathing at the very nice beach/swimming hole below ‘SockemDog’ rapids. After the good long break here (at least half-hour), will walk up the two-mile moderate climb out of the valley and to our cars.

Then is about a ten-mile drive to a short 3/10’s mile, but rigorous, root grabbing, moderate hike to 3 lovely and very different waterfalls on Brasstown Creek. 1st is a stepped waterfall, 2nd (my favorite)- a beautiful wide 30’ straight drop, the 3rd and 25’ chute into a deep and popular trout fishing hole. There is no other place in the Southeast you’ll see 3 such varied and beautiful waterfalls in such a short distance. Those that wish to can go to an inexpensive dinner at the Peking Gourmet restaurant in Clayton, GA afterwards.

NOTE: Anyone wanting to get home earlier, skip dinner, can drive up together-we’ll work this out at the park and ride lot before the hike. Hopefully most of us can dine together, as its fun to enjoy each other’s company after the event, before returning to the big city.

Recommended Items to Bring:
Use our Event Checklists to make sure you have everything you need.
The usual quart of water and gatorade if the day is hot-or energy gels, trail snacks and lunch. Water shoes (for short creek crossing to the beach), sunscreen, bathing suits under clothes for those wanting to swim/wade.

How to Get There:
Event Directions:South Carolina, east of Clayton, GA park and ride only From the park and ride, we will travel north on I-85 north approximately 12 miles to I-985 which bears off to the left, and follow it to Clayton, GA. Here we will stop at McDonalds for a restroom quick breakfast stop. Then we will follow Hwy. 7 6/2 (directly across intersection from McDonalds) several miles and cross the bridge over the Chatooga River which borders GA/SC. After only couple of miles into SC, we will drive on several local roads to our first trailhead, and park.
