Itinerary:

This another in the Summit Sunset Series where we will enjoy sunsets from some of the finest scenic viewpoints in GA...all on or near mountain peaks.  If you've never had this experience, you don't know what you're missing, so time to find out...

Ok weather forecast is looking great for Weds with highs in the mid 60s, so a great time to get up on Stone Mtn and enjoy a sunset.

Total distance is only about 2 miles and elevation gain is 650 feet.  It is a short little hike, but of course you are welcome to arrive early and do some extra mileage if you'd like.  We are also doing the Cherokee Trail before this one, but as as a separate event, so sign up for that one too if you have any interest.

But everyone can hike up at their own pace..sprint up there in 15 min if you want or take 60.  We will meet at the top and watch the sunset.  We may also do an additional half mile walk around the eastern side of the top of the mtn, but that's totally optional.

It is supposed to be in the mid 60s but definitely bring a jacket as it can get windy up there and could feel a good bit cooler.  And bring a flashlight or headlamp for the walk down.  We'll walk down on the gravel access road which is 1/10th of a mile longer than the 1 mile walkup trail but much easier footing and safer than walking down the main trail in the dark.

We will meet near the start of the walk-up trail behind the large parking lot beside Confederate Hall. There is a $10 fee to enter the park in a vehicle; however, free public parking is available in Stone Mountain Village and you can walk in for free. See directions below...

How to Get There:
Event Directions:

If you would like to try the free public parking, there is a Marta Park and Ride on Fourth Street in Stone Mountain Village. From there it is a less than a half mile walk on East Mountain Street into the Park and you will end up right at the start of the walk-up trail where we are meeting.

Additional directions and maps can be found at:
http://stonemountainpark.com/default.aspx

To the main entrance- From I-285 take U.S. Hwy 78 East (Snellville/Athens) exit. Travel about 7 miles and take Exit 8.  After entering the Park, proceed straight ahead. The road will fork in about 1 mile - stay to the right. Continue to follow the road for another mile. Confederate Hall will be on your left. The parking lot will be immediately after. We will meet behind Confederate Hall, right outside of the railroad track and near the restrooms...at the start of the walk up trail.
