Itinerary:
Easy camping, swimming, wading, and campfire fun with six mile easy to moderate hike

If you travel to the campground from Jasper on Hwy 53, please notice as you go through Tate, GA on the right a pink marble mansion. Built in 1923 by Colonel Samuel Tate, the founder of the Georgia Marble Company, it is made from a vein of extremely rare pink marble that was discovered nearby. (Further down the road on Hwy 53 in Marble Hill, GA you will see actual marble mines still operating.) The mansion is now a bed & breakfast.

Join us for camping fun at the Wildcat Tract of Dawson Forest; it is a 4,500-acre Wildlife Management Area that has recently had a new set of six trails cut into the forest. The trails officially opened last month. It is so new that relatively few people have discovered it.

The Wildcat Campground is a large tent area next to the Amilcalola River. The camping area has tent sites along with fire rings and picnic tables. There are no bathroom facilities available so you will have to bring trowels in order to make cat-holes to use, or, if you must, drive 7 + miles to shopping center to use one.

After arriving Friday night, we will set up our tent sites, and shortly after, be served Bruce’s world famous slightly hot, 3 bean turkey chili, light campfires in fire rings provided and have fun around the fire. Saturday morning, we will wake up leisurely and have coffee made and have french toast for breakfast, made with blueberry or whole wheat bread, as to individual preferences. After the first two meals, lunch will be trail food of your own preference, and dinner will be at a local diner.

After breakfast Saturday morning, we will hike approximately 3 ¼ miles on the easy Wildcat Creek and Fall Creek trails, with one roped, rock hopping creek crossing, and then following the river upstream, to a beautiful 75 waterfall with a wading, swimming hole. (Wear your swimsuit if you like!) Swimming holes abound on the Amicalola River near the campsite as well.

Bring any trail snacks desired, water, and lunch to eat at the waterfall.

After returning to the campground, we will relax, play games, swim in the river, etc. After dinner we will return, make another good fire and enjoy each other’s company.

Anyone wanting to enjoy each the groups company after waking Sunday morning can join us at the Huddle House next to the Foothills shopping center before returning home.
