Though not quite in the mountains, Unicoi State Park has definite mountain flair, with high peaks nearby, ridges rising on both sides a trout stream tumbling through it, and one of the regions most impressive waterfalls just a few miles upstream. The most celebrated offering is an outstanding mountain biking trail that has been used for several major races. There are 5 hiking trails in the park that range in length from 0.5 miles to 7 miles. There is also a 53-acre lake in the park that is stocked with bass, bream and catfish. Unicoi is about 3 miles from Helen. We will be camping in the squirrel’s nest area, which is a village of primitive camping structures. There are grills and picnic tables available nearby for the nests, along with a big fire ring and an amphitheater, which are all shared with the other nests. Comfort station with hot water showers and bathrooms within about 50 yards. We will be parking at the trading post, about 100 yards from the nests and walking down with our gear. The nests themselves are roofed, but open on three sides. You will be sharing a shelter with as many as four other people. Tarps are allowed for privacy, but no tents are allowed at all. After arriving on Friday evening, we will gather around the fire for a chili supper, story telling, and marshmallow roasting. Saturday will be a day of on your own activities. Breakfast and lunch will be provided. There will be an organized hike starting around 11am. Other activities in the area include mountain biking, fishing, and touring Helen. Dinner will be on your own in Helen so that everyone can enjoy the festival. We recommend carpooling to Helen, but transportation to and from Helen is your responsibility. Please note this when arranging for your carpools. Sunday will begin with breakfast in the crisp mountain air. We will have a short hike organized to start around noon for those who are interested.
