FDR State Park, at 10,000 acres, is Georgiaís largest state park. It is deeply rooted in the historical era of four-time president Franklin D. Roosevelt. Seeking a place for treatment after being stricken with polio in 1921, Roosevelt traveled to nearby Warm Springs and built his Little White House. Dowdellís Knob was FDRís favorite picnic spot, overlooking a magnificent view of the valley below. FDRís grill was preserved, and can still be seen.
We will hike this loop counterclockwise. Expected hiking time: about 2.5 hours, including rest stops.
Optional: After the hike we will have a picnic lunch at the parking lot. There are several picnic tables with a nice view.
|How to Get There:|
|Event Directions:||Pine Mountain, GA 9:45 a.m. at Dowdellís Knob parking lot. Proceed South on Interstate 85 until Interstate 185. Continue south on Interstate 185 until Exit 34/GA 18. At the top of the ramp turn left (East) on GA 18. After about 6.7 miles you will see an entrance to Callaway Gardens on your right. At that point, GA 18 transitions into GA 354. Continue straight on GA 354 (crossing US27 in the process) about 4 miles, until you get to GA 190 at a stone bridge. Turn left onto GA 190 and proceed about 5.4 miles. Turn right onto a paved road (watch for a sign showing a picnic table). Dowdellís Knob parking lot is 1.3 miles at the end of this road.|
Are Dogs Permitted? No.
Will this event occur rain or shine? Yes. If the rain is too heavy for hiking, we will visit FDRís Little White House, which is in nearby Pine Mountain (admission is $7.00 per person).
