Itinerary:
Moderate 4.2 miles each way.

We will hike South on the Appalachian Trail from Hightower Gap to the Three Forks camping area, which is about 4 miles. The hike starts with a moderate upward grade for the first mile or so. From then there are no significant elevation changes until near our destination, where the trail descends moderately for about half a mile. We should get to Three Forks before 3 pm and will spend some time exploring this beautiful area with its creeks and waterfalls. The next day we will strike our tents and return to Hightower Gap. We should be back in Atlanta not later than 4pm Sunday.

Recommended Items to Bring:
Use our Event Checklists to make sure you have everything you need.
Don’t forget to bring sleeping bag, tent, mattress, cooking utensils, picnic lunch for Saturday, food for dinner on Saturday night and breakfast and lunch on Sunday (lunch should be cold), stove, and at least one quart of water. I will bring filtration equipment to treat water.

This event is suitable for a beginning backpacker. I have a spare tent, stove and other equipment that I can lend.

How to Get There:
Event Directions:Meet at carpool ONLY. From downtown Atlanta drive north on GA 400 to Exit 8. Take a left on Mansell Road, and the first left into the parking lot. If you got to the next light you went too far.

Notes:
