Itinerary:

The North Georgia mountains may not be the Himalayas or the Rockies, but do offer many opportunties for challenging and exciting hikes to outstanding scenic views.  For this series, we are summiting the 20 highest peaks in Georgia.  (For more info on the criteria used, click here.)

 #2 - Rabun Bald

Standing 4696' above sea level with 1016' of clean prominence, Rabun Bald is the 2nd tallest peak in GA...you can see Tray Mtn, Whiteside Mtn, Mt Yonah, Big Scaly, Standing Indian and many other GA/NC/SC peaks.

Weather: March has very unsettled weather patterns, so flexibility needs to be in your demeanor for this trip. We will reschedule the hike in the event of definite rain.

We will meet at the carpool at 8:00 and start our hike from the trailhead at around 10:00. We will make this ascent along the 4.1 mile Bartram Trail Route. The road to the very small parking area is gravel with limited parking. The road may pose an issue for low clearance vehicles. This is a moderate, and very nicely laid out trail. Although there are some overlooks on the hike up, the "prize" for this hike is the spectacular views awarded from the viewing platform built on the peak of Rabun Bald by the YCC. If the winds cooperate, then we expect to lunch on the peak before our descent along the same route.

This is an early spring event, respect MUST be paid to Mother Nature. Weather conditions can always deteriorate, and we must be prepared to react. It is important that you dress in layers with no/minimal cotton fabrics against your skin, especially socks. Do not wear tennis shoes. Additionally, make sure your pack includes a warm hat, gloves, wind protection, and neck protection.

The return trip to Atlanta will be determined by each carpool.
