Itinerary:

At the moment the weather looks fine for Saturday, so why not do an old favorite.

This in-and-out hike starts at Unicoi Gap on Hwy 75, north of Helen. From the trailhead we ascend 1100 ft. over 1.3 miles to the top of Rocky Mtn, descend 800 ft. over 1.3 miles to Indian Grave Gap, ascend 1300 ft. over 2.4 miles to the summit of Tray Mtn, and continue a bit further to the off-trail lookout. We’ll have lunch there, enjoying the view, and then retrace our steps. With a total elevation gain of 3200 ft, this hike provides a good workout, but we will make stops as needed to keep from getting too hot.

The photo, taken from Kelly's Knob, shows an overview of the route. Unicoi Gap is in the valley at the right side of the photo. The trail then goes to the top of Rocky Mtn and down the other side. The next peak you see on the horizon is Brier. I don't know if the short one next to it has a name. The AT runs behind both and ascends Tray Mountain, situated at the left edge of the photo.

Eva will be coordinating the carpool at Indian Trail park-and-ride and I'll be joining the group at 9:30 at the Cleveland Ingles, behind the gas pumps. This is also a good place for a pit stop. After the hike we'll have dinner in Cleveland, so please plan your carpool accordingly.
