Itinerary:

Let's go backpacking!  ;-)

We'll start our hike from the Walhalla fish hatchery in South Carolina. It's a 3 mile hike on the East Fork trail down to the Chattooga River where we'll go downriver another mile or so to find a good open camp spot for the group.  Be prepared to hike an extra mile or so to find an appropriate site.

We'll spend the afternoon relaxing, swimming and most likely hike upriver to find the Ellicott Rock Wilderness area marker that's on the 3 state border.  If you want to stand on all three states at the same time, (Georgia, South Carolina and North Carolina), the area marker is located on a little island you will have to cross to, through the water, so it will be advantageous to have water shoes to get there; the water can be rushing rapidly here, but it's no more than 15' or so, if memory serves me right.  Round trip hiking from the camp site (depending where we camp) will be approximately 4.5 miles.

If you want to fish, you'll need a permit (be sure to check that out on your own.)

On Sunday, after breakfast and some more swimming we'll start the return trip up the East Fork  back to the Fish hatchery.  We can stop for lunch in Walhalla; Carolina Pizza looks good.

Up to 2 well-behaved friendly dogs allowed.

Thank you to Dirk Bertrand for some of this trip description and photo!
