Itinerary:

The weather is supposed to be perfect on Wednesday; what a perfect evening to have a nice hike to the top of Yonah, have a little picnic and watch the sunset. At 3166' Mount Yonah has great views over the surrounding area and with it's westerly facing overlook provides a great spot to watch a clear sunset. There will also be a very interesting moonset, just after sunset... a 1.8% (that's a sliver) waxing moon.

Our route will follow the main trail up with a side trip to the bottom of the cliff face. From the bottom of the cliffs we will take an alternative trail to the top. The hike to the top is only 2.3 miles, however, it has 1,400 feet of ascent. So this should be considered a very upper end D3 hike, so make sure you are suited for such a hike.

When we reach the top of Yonah, we should have about an hour before sunset. This will give us a little time to wander around the top, get some photos on the famous overhang, and eat a snack/picnic at the overlook while watching the sun set. And right after sunet, the waxing moon 'sliver' should be visible and make some great photos.

The hike down will be in the dark (little to no moon-light), so a good headlamp/flashlight is a must. We will hike at a moderate pace with with some stops for photo opportunities.

The temperature at the beginning of the hike will be around 80 deg, however, it should drop to about 74 deg with a slight breeze when we're at the overlook. If you are prone to getting chilly in that weather, you may want to bring along a long sleeve shirt.

Special thanks to Tony C. for the great sunset promo photo!
