This is an 11 mile loop starting at Standing Indian Campground, up on the Kimsey Creek Trail to Deep Gap, north on the AT to the summit of Standing Indian, and return to via the Lower Ridge Trail.

The summit of Standing Indian Mountain offers great views to the south and the Georgia Blue Ridge.  The bald mountain area was, according to Cherokee Legend, created by lightning that killed a monster that had carried off a child. We will see if we can make out the Cherokee warrior who was turned to stone in the process.

This is a difficult hike with aproximately 3000 ft of elevation gain, so the trip leader may contact you to determine your fittness level.

Dogs must be on leash at all times and not interfere with other hikers or dogs.

Note:  The trip leader reserves the right to remove anyone from the list who they feel cannot handle this trip.

I-985 will turn into US-23 N/US-441 N/GA-15; remain on this road to Franklin, NC

From Franklin, take US 64W for about 12 miles, turn left on S.R.1448 (West Old Murphy Road, old US 64). There will be a brown sign before you get to the intersection that indicates the left turn to Wallace Gap/Standing Indian Campground.

Continue on S.R. 1448 to Wallace Gap (about 1.9 miles) and turn right, following the sign to Standing Indian Campground.

Do not turn into the campground but continue on S.R. 1448 to the parking area at the Backcountry Information Center (just a big sign on the right), about 2 miles from Wallace Gap. We'll be driving on paved road the entire way.
