Beginners are welcome (thats what the trip is for). However, they have to be willing to push themselves, be good swimmers, be unafraid of swimming in choppy water or being underwater, be willing to actively take responsibility for their own rescue if they flip (just waiting for someone else to help compounds the problem), and ideally have been on a bit of white water before (rafting, canoeing etc).

I will give an hour instruction on kayaking techniques, river reading, safety, river rescue etc before we set off, then we will take time on the river to practice basic whitewater techniques before setting off downstream (note that Im not an expert, but do know the basics-hopefully our guide will help as well). The purpose of the trip is to play and learn, so we will stop to play in as many rapids as possible on the way downriver.

Depending on water level, participant experience and time, we may run the standard section twice, or put in 1.5 hours upriver of the normal start in an easier section and do a single run. We also have the option of going further down the river and running larger rapids. Rapids are Class I-III at current water levels.

The outfitter is River Right (riverright.com). We will have a guide with us for safety. We will be on the water for at least 4 hours, so with shuttle time, etc, we will probably be ready to drive back around 5 pm.

Anyone who wants to try out a whitewater kayak before signing up for the trip is welcome to come to my house in Dunwoody on Thursday night (May 2nd) at 6:30 pm to try one out (I have one on a lake there). Just send me an email at: udolicht@yahoo.com by noon Thurs. >
