Itinerary:
Standing 4040' above sea level with 1008' of clean prominence, Horsetrough Mountain is just off the AT about 4 miles south of Jacks Gap.

We will start at Jacks Gap on Hwy 180 and hike south on the Jacks Knob Trail.  From there we will follow the AT then head off trail in a southwesterly direction to summit Horsetrough. On our descent, we will hike due east down the mountain to the AT. From there, we will hike back to Jacks Gap.

If time permits we will make a short loop to find the headwaters of the Chattahoochee River and then pick up the AT heading toward Jacks Gap.

The hike involves leaving the AT and some off trail for about a mile up to the summit of Horsetrough.  The terrain is easy with sparse ground vegetation, with the exception of about a quarter of a mile of blackberry briars on a portion of the ascent. Weather permitting, we will see Brasstown Bald during our ascent, but the view at the top of Horsetrough is OK, but it is surrounded by trees.  We will spend some time at the summit for a break before returning.
