Itinerary:
Roan Mountain is on National Geographics top 100 American Adventures list:
http://adventure.nationalgeographic.com/adventure/trips/americas- best-adventures/100-adventures-list/

Roan Mountain State Park encompasses 2,006 acres of southern Appalachian forest at the base of 6,285 foot Roan Mountain. Park elevation ranges from 3,000 feet in the valley to around 3,700 feet on surrounding ridges. Rich hardwood forests allow for a great diversity of life and a wide range of outdoor activities. Park guests have opportunities to hike along creeks and ridges.

Wildflowers and wildlife inhabit the hollows and ridges of the Roan foothills in abundance. From Dutchman's-breeches to deer, trillium to turkeys and bee balm to black bears there is always something to discover.
There are approximately 12 miles of hiking trails in Roan Mountain State Park

We will arrive on Friday to set up camp. Friday will be for exploring Roan Mountain State Park. There will be a hike in the park for those that want to participate. Friday Evening will be campfire time.

Saturday after breakfast we will Hike Roan Mountain trails. We will begin with a warm up with easy one mile on the Rhododendrum Gardens Trail. We will then begin our moderate Appalachian Trail Three Bald Hike. This is a moderate 4.7 mile hike with an elevation gain of 994 feet. It is an out and back trail with rolling balds. The group will park at Carvers Gap. The trailhead leads to Round Bald then Jane Bald to Grassy Ridge Bald. This hike has been compared to the three bears. Baby Bear, Mama Bear and Papa Bear getting larger and better as you go along. We will go back the same way we came in.
We will then take a vote to see who is up for an easy 2.7 miles on the Cloudland and Roan Gardens trail with a beautiful view at the Roan High Bluff Overlook at 6267 feet.
After breakfast on Sunday we will pack up our campsite and either do a hike or go into the villiage to look around and have lunch.
