Itinerary:

Exciting times! This is the first AOC cave event since 2016. With that being said, it is time to EXPLORE the underworld as we cave, Howards Waterfall Cave. In the cave community, this is considered a beginner's cave, but this is considered moderate for those who do not cave regularly.

Howards Waterfall is a horizontal cave that extends 3 miles and has been explored by novice and experienced cavers. There is a section that is gated as it protects a section of the cave that has wall inscriptions written in the Cherokee Syllabary. This is a fun cave that has some nice cave formations, fun passages and chambers, a few muddy slopes occasionally, moderate rock breakdown to scramble,  and moderate crawling in tight spaces. An explorer's paradise! "This is not a commercial cave, so it is not a tour."

To sign up, you must be in good physical shape, not claustrophobic, afraid of the dark, or scared of getting wet, dirty, and sometimes scratched if you bump into the rocks.  It is a lot of fun, but not for everyone. It is required that you have a caving helmet with a light, extra flashlights (and batteries), snacks, water, a pack that you do not mind getting dirty, hike or athletic shoes that you do not mind getting muddy and wet, old jeans or coveralls that will get muddy, gloves, and knee pads.

You will also need to complete the waiver and sign-up on the SCCI link for our permit to visit use this link you must sign a release form. The group's permit cannot be approved until all members of the group have signed a release form.

There is no fee, but feel free to donate to the SCCI, as they protect our caves! (not required)

Plan to explore the different passages and chambers as to see as much of the cave as we can explore. This is one of my favorite caves and a perfect cave to explore the world of caving and the underworld. We look forward to caving with everyone! - Erica
