Write Up:

The Wintery Mix of bad weather or icy roads did not show up for our hike.  But 11 hikers did, and enjoyed a brisk, scenic mid-winter 7.5 mile hike as planned!  Welcome to new members Irena and Sam on their first hike with the AOC, and to John and Hyacinth on their second.

I love to see wildlife, so I'm always looking for it. We saw 4 deer grazing all together, quite a few small birds darting in and out of the woods and heard the distinctive call of the sand hill cranes flying above the low cloud cover.  We also saw much evidence of trail maintenance and improvement by volunteers including an eagle scout troup.   Winter is a good time to do that since everything is pretty dormant and visibility is so good.  The Beech trees with their golden brown leaves were everywhere, so even a cloudy winter day has it's own beauty.

Hikers on a Wide Trail near Cheatham Hill

Here are most of us on the wide trail also known as Old John Ward Rd on the west side of Cheatham Hill.

Thanks again to all who came out and made it a memorable Saturday morning.  I'll lead this hike again throughout the year as part of my Kennesaw Park Trail Mix Series.

If anyone else took any pics, just e- mail me the link and I'll include it here:
