We had an awesome group of AOC'ers come out for the Rivers Alive cleanup along the Etowah River in Canton, GA. We met around 8:45 at the pavilion in the back of Boling Park. The Rivers Alive group along with the Upper Etowah River alliance and a few more sponsors provided light breakfast refreshments and free T-shirts for our volunteer efforts. Since we are the outdoor adventure seekers, we were sent to a different location, which was a little more remote. Brown Industrial park was where we were heading for the morning. The back toward the river used to be an old sod farm, but now just a bunch of briars and a lot of trash hidden within. The Etowah River was hard to access, but we managed to pick up a bunch of garbage and trash along the dirt roads that paralled the Etowah. Some of us did make it down to a small branch off the river, which we found a lot of stuff that would have other wise been washed into the river the next big rain that came through. Overall, we did our good deed for the day and I'm very appreciative of the group that came out. You guys/gals rock and I can't thank you enough. So, back to Boling Park we go to enjoy a free lunch again provided by the sponsors. There were 7 of us took an optional hike afterwards, which was 5 miles r/t along the Etowah, up to the Hightower church/cemetary and back to the Boling Park pavilion. Nice short hike and I think everyone seem to enjoy it. We kept a great pace since it's an easy trail and we were out of there by 2:30. I've posted pictures on Picasa, so please be sure to check them out when you get an opportuniy. I put the AOC logo, Rivers Alive logo and date on the pic that we took of our mound of garbage. Be looking for it to go in the newsletter that I'll be sending out before the social. See ya'll soon on another adventure. Paula Schubert AOC Event Coordinator
