In spite of the chilly weather, we still had a full group of hikers coming out to join us at Island Ford. Our trip leader, Lyndsay, was doing her second solo hike and looking forward to a great time with our AOC hikers. After introductions, we got started with a quick walk around the nearby pond, then crossed back over towards the Visitors Center and began to explore the many trails in the area. The leaves may have been on the ground, but nature was still glorious and beautiful! Water trickled through streams and roared along the river. We even were lucky enough to see about 4 deer! (If our fearless leader wasn't in the habit of looking down to see snakes and lizards, we may have seen the deer earlier!) They crossed the trail in front of us, ran about 100 feet away, then stopped to watch us watching them! It was a great time. Even better, all 10 of us made it back to the parking lot. Now there's something to celebrate! ;) Hopefully next time we'll get some warmer weather - come join us then!
