Talk about a winter wonderland! After winter storm Jonas walloped the area with snow, ice, and gusty winds, we decided the show must go on, and headed up to Amicalola Falls. It was COLD when we hit the trailhead, about 28 degrees, but we quickly warmed to the crunch of fresh snow underfoot. We marveled at the branches sparkling with ice and the bright cerulean blue sky. As the temperature gradually rose, we marched in tune to a symphony of water dripping, ice chunks plummeting, and branches crackling.

Turning off the AT Approach trail, we followed the Hike Inn trail to the welcoming shelter of the inn, where we enjoyed a modest repast consisting of apples & peanut butter, broccoli & walnut salad, turkey & bok choy sandwich, cranberry-quinoa energy bars, Snickers, and more. This group does not mess around when it comes to tasty trail fare!

We emerged from the inn into a changed world. The snow was melting so fast under the brilliant sunshine that it looked and felt as though it were raining. The earth below us, too, had transformed into a slushy, slippery, soggy mess. We tramped back down to the parking lot, happy for the pleasant company and perfect day.
