Fourteen brave souls set out into the freezing cold for another great winter backpacking trip at Siler Bald this weekend to try out their cold weather gear and watch some meteors! After a 4 mile hike uphill to Siler Bald, Scott graced us all with his meat (mind out of the gutter, folks, I am referring to the prosciutto) and melted brie, along with some awesome tunes that could be found on any middle school girl's mixed tapes from 1992...At 8:00 p.m., as temperatures were clearly below freezing and we could not get the fire going due to the damp wood, everyone talked about surrendering to the cold and clouds and going to their tents for the night. Looking behind us, we discovered a small patch of clear in the distance, and the women, particular praise going to Marissa for her fire building skills and Steven for being the only guy to step up and collect us some wood, rallied and got the fire going with a vengeance! Soon we had a fire, the sky cleared, and meteors began to appear. Those brave enough to stay out as the night got colder and colder and colder were able to see a spectacular show, with meteors every 5 to 60 seconds all around us. Steven, in rare form, was one of the last 5 standing. In the morning, the fierce winds on the mountain acted as our alarm clock and we made it in plenty of time for the Shoney's breakfast buffet, which was in my opinion the perfect end for the perfect winter backpacking trip! Great idea Jon! All in all, this was an awesome trip with an awesome group and I hope to see everyone on the trail again soon!
