Two traits will make for an exceptional backpacker.  These are preparedness, and adaptability.  Both were well tested on our trip through the Grayson highlands this past weekend.

First our shuttle van began having mechanical problems, which led to us being dropped in a full half-day closer to town than planned.  Then a horrendous storm near Mt. Rodgers shook our tents with rain and wind for most of the night.  Our nylon canopies were fully illuminated under some of the most impressive lightning I’ve ever seen.

The reward?  Breathtaking views, over the sprawling mountain balds, and ponies.  Ponies everywhere!  Our group was very strong physically, but more so mentally.  Even with a couple of flooded tents, the third most important trait of exceptional backpackers was brought to light; a steadfast sense of humor.

By maintaining a quick pace on the last day, we strategically beat most of the bad weather.  A special thanks to Eric for the many hours of driving.  Also a warm welcome to Janie, new to the club, but certainly in possession of the three traits described above.  It was a wonderful trip.  Now on to the next section of the AT!
