Write Up:

It was cool and overcast as we began our hike. Due to the short notice and heavy schedule of AOC activities this weekend we had a nice small group of four. The trail was a bit muddy in places but never a serious hazard. We took a short detour toward the Columns Drive section to visit the fenced gravesite of some of the area’s residents of two centuries ago. As we made our way back to the parking lot Joyce and Evelyn schooled us on the hazards of chiggers and poison ivy, which was abundant in places. After hearing, for the first time, of the consequences of contact with poison ivy Naomi kept us safe with her close scrutiny of the trail ahead. By the time we reached the parking lot we had exhausted our inventories of jokes about lawyers, accountants and engineers. As we were preparing to leave, two medieval characters with massive faux swords emerged from the woods. Joyce approached them to hear their story. They were very elaborately dressed as characters in a video game and were photographing themselves in the natural setting of the Sope Creek area. Healthy exercise, good friends and interesting conversation was a nice way to begin the day. ~ Hugh
