Write Up:

It was a sunny, chilly day for a hike at Vineyard Mountain.  We had 14 hearty hikers willing to brave the cold for a chance to see one of the most interesting trail systems in the metro area.  Along the way we learned a little about both the iron ore mining that operated on the property we were hiking but also the construction of the Lake Allatoona dam.

Approximately half way through the hike, we reached an overlook above the Lake Allatoona Dam and on the return back to the parking lot, we hiked through two separate iron ore mine sites which was interesting.  The trail did not have any lengthy climbs but there were numerous short, steep climbs which gave our legs plenty of work.  We finished the 5.6 mile hike with nearly 1300 feet of elevation gain.  ~ Holt
