Write Up:

We had an interesting hike on the Iron Hill trail at Red Top Mountain State Park.  We visited a old iron mine off the trail which was open in the late 1800s.  As we headed out the Iron Hill trail, we dropped down to the Lake Allatoona shore line which was an interesting walk on land that is usually underwater but high and dry with the winter lake drawdown.

We continued out further on the peninsula, reaching an old abandoned campground which was last used in the 1980s.  Along the way we explored some old roads that were used back in the 1800s when the iron mines were open. We made our way back to the cars but made one last stop to view an even larger pit mine that is even larger than the first one we visited at the beginning of the hike.  All in all a great winter hike. ~ Holt
