The old blowdowns had been cleared, and only a few blocked the path. The clouds parted for our lunch along the creek, and the falls were as gorgeous and thundering as always. The abundant mushrooms of summer were hiding, but a few fungi stood out, as well as a tiny orange mushroom on a log that Bunnie spotted. We were heralded by the jungle sounds of a pileated woodpecker on the south section of trail and finally got a great view of it. It was great to meet Lee Ann, Richard, Amy, Stacy and Renee as they explore AOC events. Christa powered along with a loaded pack, and Stacy met the challenge of a solid trek in high spirits. Renee spotted a tiny pine, then Joyce got wind of the game and found some micro- pines, which she documented. (Her group picture may be sharper than mine, but I bet I got bigger laughs, not that I’m competitive, or anything.).
