First Snowfall, Last Rattler

The group couldn't have asked for a more perfect day to climb Georgia's second highest mountain, Rabun Bald.  The relentless three mile hike up to the fire tower was rewarded with glimpses of the first snowfall and a panoramic view of the fall colors for miles in every direction. The cold temperatures and high winds tested our endurance, leaving only the toughest ones standing in the end.

Flat Top Mountain provided more stunning views of the fall colors and a nice break before heading back down to the trailhead.  Four of the hikers had the privilege of meeting probably the last Timber Rattlesnake of the year, an experience they will not forget!  The group grew quieter as they neared the trailhead, a combination of numbness from the cold, reflection of the day's events and exhaustion.  Afterwords, the group met at La Cabana for the fastest and most delicious Mexican dinner on record.
