The Iron Hill section of Red Top Mountain is a beautiful place for a winter hike.  We started by heading out towards the old ore mine which we briefly visited.  Next we dropped down to the lake shore line which has been exposed by the winter lake level drawdown.  Then we headed out to the old abandoned campground which operated until the early 1980s before being closed down.  We did some off trail along the way, visiting the site of an long ago disappeared homesite near the campground.

Then we started heading back the way we came.  Along the way, we hiked to an overlook above the former Crow Bank mine and marveled at the depth of this largely hand dug mine.  Then we headed back to the cars and the end of our approximately 6 mile hike.  ~ Holt
