Beautiful day, stunning views, awesome group! Started tha day at Sam Knob trailhead with a quick ascent of Sam Knob (6,045 ft), then a short backtrack and several creek crossings later we reached our second objective, Devils Courthouse (5,719 ft) for a quick snack and to take in stunning views. Next, a short ascent to reach the Art Loeb Trail and Silvermine Bald (5,960 ft) near the Blue Ridge Parkway. We would follow along the high ridge from here, crossing numerous peaks, including Black Balsam Knob (6,214 ft), Tennent Mountain (6,040 ft) and finally ending up at marble covered Shining Rock (6,001 ft). At Shining Rock Gap, we left the ridge and headed down Ivester Trail basically an old logging road for a few miles all the way back to our cars. A very satisfying, long and enjoyable day.
