Write Up:

Russ was out of town today, so I took his usual Tuesday hike. We didn't see Bleau, though we didn't reallly spend much time at the creek. Our route was not the usual one, but it was interesting. We went past the dam into the neighborhood to see the Founders Cemetery and then took a cut-through to Oxbo Road. We managed to get in 5 miles at a steady, moderate pace.
When we passed the cemetery, we saw eggplants placed along the entrance stairs. It turns out eggplants are an offering to the ancient African Orisha Oya, the protector of cemeteries and the dead. She watches over these places, guarding the spirits of the departed with one foot in the world of the living and one in the world of the deceased. Oya is deeply connected to those who have passed over and is said to guide the dead through the cemetery gates to their eternal resting place.

Lee captured a great photo of a buck and a doe deep in the woods. What pretty creatures they were.

Michelle H. joined us for just her second hike with the AOC. She's a great conversationalist, and we'll enjoy seeing her until she starts her new job in January.

Thanks to Lee for the photos he added to the album. ~. Joyce
