Tue, Oct 1 2024 - Tuesday Morning at Olde Rope Mill - Mill Trails (View Original Event Details)
|
Five withdrawals left just Mike and I on today's hike. We decided to go ahead and explore the trails so that we would know better how to lead hikes there in the future. We intended to hike the Mill Trail section, but after hiking over an hour there, we decided it wasn't a safe trail on which to take D2 level members. So we changed plans and hiked the Explorer Trail section instead. This area was well suited for hiking with largely smooth trails and gently rolling hills, so when we decide to post a hike at Olde Rope Mill in the future, we'll post the hike for the Explorer Trail. In order to get a 5 mile hike, we'll add the paved Trestle Rock Trail, which is a flat out-and-back 1 mile hike right next to the river.
While on the Explorer Trail, we passed close to the river where a giant piece of machinery was dredging the river to remove silt which had built up from the recent storms. We hiked down to the edge of the river to watch the operation.
We saw lots of interesting things: Joro spiders, a turtle, a Great Blue Heron, grafitti on the ruins across the river, and, of course, interesting scenery. ~ Joyce
