Sweetwater Creek AOC Hke - Sunday Morning Highlights
We had a fantastic hike today at one Atlanta Hidden gems - Sweetwater Creek State Park.
We could not have asked for better weather today with a starting temp around 55 degrees, sunny, and no chance of rain. We covered a distance of a little over 9.3 miles and about 1100 feet of elevation.
Starting a little after 8:30 am, ten of us headed down to the Red trail, along the river, stopping by the historic Manchester Mill ruins constructed in 1849. During the Civil War the mill produced uniforms for the Confederate army.
We continued on the Red Trail and then took a turn onto the White Trail. Along the way we stopped by the off-trail cemetery from back in the 1800’s, then hiking for a few miles eventually ending up at the Visitors center for a bathroom and snack break.
After the break, we took a dash on the Purple Trail up the river to the bridge and then headed across to tackle the more strenuous Orange and Yellow trails. We had to dodge many, somewhat slippery, acorns in the area, but we knew the squirrels would soon be collecting them for the winter harvest.
We finished up right on time around 12:30 pm back at the Visitor Center.
Thanks to all who joined us, especially our newer members Maurici, Sunshine, and Pippa.
Keep on the lookout for “Sweet” hikes like this one in the future.
