The morning started cold and sunny and a lite wind; the temperature started in the high-30’s and was in mid-40’s at the end. Returning by the field with no wind it felt warm. We had several hikers that had not had the opportunity to experience this part of KMNBP. We left the parking lot headed south on the Kolb’s Farm West Trail until we came to Powder Springs Street. There we picked up the Kolb’s Farm East Trail, we stopped to talk about a social trail, at another point we talked about how 50 years ago one part of the trail was underwater causing the park to build a trail on higher ground, and the new bridge to replace two bridges on this part of the trail (hopefully in 2025). We proceeded to the Illinois monument and the restrooms. We followed the Cease Fire Trail to the Old John Ward Trail. We turned left on the Old John Ward Road Trail and returned to the parking lot. Overall, it was a beautiful day for hiking.
Thanks to JT for joining us on his first hike and Lee pointed out that this was his thirteenth hike, thus he was now an old timer.
