Springtime at Springer Mountain! Brisk 40 degree weather and blue skies awaited us as we started our hike to the southern terminus of the Appalachian Trail. After admiring the vistas there, we proceeded onto the Benton MacKaye Trail and then the AT as the two routes crossed in a series of serpentine loops. Onward we went to Owens Overlook for great long-range views and then uphill to Rich Mountain before descending into the lush creeks and rhododendrons near Three Forks. After crossing Chester Creek we proceeded up to Long Creek Falls for lunch next to the cascade. We continued to pass many AT through-hikers, campers, and dayhikers as we returned to our cars.
