Write Up:

The morning started cold and sunny and a lite wind; the temperature started in the low-50’s and was in high-50’s at the end. We had several hikers that had not had the opportunity to experience this part of KMNBP. We left the parking lot, passed the Illinois Monument and the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier. We talked about the unknown soldier heading down the Kolb’s Farm East Trail and crossed the John Ward Creek, stopping briefly on the current bridge to talk about the new bridge that might hopefully be replaced in May. From there we talked about how 50 years ago part of the trail was underwater causing the park to build a trail on higher ground. We came to Powder Springs Street and headed north on the Kolb’s Farm West Trail until we came to the Assault Line Trail and followed it back to the Illinois monument and parking lot. On several occasions we felt a few drops of rain, never more than a few drops.

Thanks to Elizabeth for joining us on her third hike and Petra for joining us on her fifth hike.

Mike
