Only one hardy hiker came along for this exploratory backpacking trip that was a success on many levels — except finding a good backpacking route! Hilary, on his fourth AOC event, came with me seeking a beautiful collection of waterfalls in a nearly trail less area. I had great reports of the sights to be enjoyed, but the trip has not appeared on the AOC roster in many years. We quickly encountered obstacles that had developed since this trip was last done by AOC. Some storm(s) swept through the area knocking down hundreds of massive trees, obscuring trails, and completely blocking progress. We turned back from our intended path many times and never got to most of the waterfalls. As it was exploratory, we considered it a success because we explored! And we had a nice overnight camp at Woods Hole Shelter, met a Ridgerunner and numerous AT thru hikers, hiked a loop on the Freeman Trail to the AT and over Blood Mountain. A fun an instructive trip, even if neither of us is anxious to repeat it!
