Write Up:

The morning started as the mist ended; the mid-70’s during the whole hike. The trails were muddy in several places, however most of the trails were in great shape. We had several hikers that had not had the opportunity to experience this part of KMNBP. We left the parking lot headed south on the Kolb’s Farm West Trail until we came to Powder Springs Street. There we picked up the Kolb’s Farm East Trail, We stopped to talk about how 50 years ago one part of the trail was underwater causing the park to build a trail on higher ground, with last nights rain that part of the trail was slightly above the creek and the sand was soft as I demonstrated as my boot went below the surface. We took the new bridge across John Ward Creek and proceeded to the Illinois monument where being Memorial Day we stopped for a monument of silence. After a restroom stop, we followed the Cease Fire Trail to the Old John Ward Trail. We turned left on the Old John Ward Road Trail and returned to the parking lot. Overall, it was a nice day for hiking.
