The day was met with cool temperatures and happy attitudes. With all hikers arriving at the carpool location on time, the group preceded the short distance drive to the southern trailhead. The route was discussed at the trailhead and the adventure began. After an easy and flat one mile hike the group intersected the Sweetwater Creek white trail, at the point where the runoff from Jack's lake flows into Sweetwater Creek. The path taken was along Sweetwater Creek via white trail to the red trail. Although little rain had fallen in the past few days, the rapids provided a wonderful display and much welcome sounds. At the point where the red trail breaks left, the hikers continued straight on the yellow trail to view the washed out iron bridge.
This bridge is a great example of the furry the floods brought to Douglas County in Sept. of 2009. Returning to the red trail the group progressed to the Welcome Center to view the displays and to enjoy a welcomed break. After a short time, the hike continued on the white trail where the southern trail is accessed and the hike was completed. The total miles completed was 7.5 and the total time elapsed from carpool to carpool was 4.5 hours.
