Write Up:

Despite a number of obstacles, this group of AOC troopers made "lemonade out of lemons!"   With the AOC website down for approx 18 hours before our trip, we had limited communication data, but all participants managed to meet up and make the ride to the beautiful Smoky Mountains.   Upon arrival at our campsite, we leisurely set up our camp until a quick rain storm made us scurry to create a covered social space.    Thanks to Joe and his Boy Scout preparedness, we concocted a "Hooverville" type shelter that doubled in size before the rains quit pestering us.

The remainder of the trip held less than optimal results as A) The synchronization of the fire flies was past peak...though not completely absent.   However, our pitch dark walk to the Elkmont Cemetary will certainly be remembered.   Fortunately, there were enough "mating" fire flies for the group to get the idea of the phenomena we went to witness.    and B) Our hike to Andrews Bald on the slopes of Clingman's Dome reminded us of why they call them the Smoky Moutains as the cloud cover hid a majority of our vista from the bald.   However, with Helena in charge of the weather, the Gods did give us a slight vista glance during our relaxing lunch among the blooming azaleas and rhodendendrums.

Following the mid-day hike, we split into 2 groups...Group 1 went on a nature drive near Gatlinburg and were lucky enough to see a bear in the park.   Group 2 went swimming at the Sinks where they were entertained by Sherrie's "Acapulco-esqe" cliff diving.

On our last day, a majority of the group arose early (though maybe earlier would have been better) to visit Cade's Cove to go bike riding around the valley.    After scaring a few deer and visiting a cabin or 2, we returned to break camp and make the trek back to Atlanta.

As trip leader, I would like to thank ALL the participants for their patience, flexibility, and great attitude.   It is this kind of successful trip, in spite of the obstacles, that make the AOC a uniquely superior club.
