Write Up:
Well, 2007 has been rough on Georgia's rivers, and this weekend the Broad was no exception. Notwithstanding the glowering clouds and piddly spitting rain of Thursday night, there was none in the North GA/North Carolina area that feeds the Broad River and thusly the river was very low...so low, in fact, that we were "advised" not to take the river because it would require a lot of walking/carrying of our boats. Able bodied all, we decided to risk it, and loaded our stuff up for a quick ride to the "Upper" section of the Broad, which is deeper and wider than the Lower section. We were issued "sit on tops" instead of keowees due to the depth of the water...but I think we all found them to be fun water craft nonetheless! It was challenging, but fun. We had to learn more about how the river runs in order to navigate it without grounding on the sand bars, but it was an excellent opportunity for the less experienced paddlers to learn more paddling motions without the danger of faster water! Afterwards, a group of us met in Athens for dinner, and discovered an EXCELLENT Thai restaurant. The food was delicious, the service perfect.
