Write Up:
Weather can vary a great deal in January, but we got lucky this Saturday. Even at 4000 ft plus all we needed were light jackets. After about a two hour or so ride to North Carolina we reached the Osage Overlook, parking lot and prepared for the first part of the hike. This was a 3 ½ mile or so loop, most of which followed along a creek. The highlight for many people was when the Event Coordinator was asked to test how stable the rocks were on a stream crossing. Not very as he fell into the creek. Fortunately it was not bitterly cold winter day .

When then returned to the parking lot to begin the second part of the hike – scaling Scaly Mountain. This was a fairly gentle 1000 foot ascent to 4800 feet, although a few sections of the trail had large puddles (typically ice this time of year). With the weather being nice, we stayed about 20 minutes at the summit enjoying scenic views of the surrounding mountains and towns. We then began the quick ascent down and were back at our cars by four o’clock. The group unanimously voted to get pizza at a nearby restaurant and everybody was back in Atlanta by seven.
