The eight participants left the carpool location just after 8:15 AM. After a couple of brief stops we arrived at Winding Stair Gap, put on our hiking gear and started the ascent up to Siler Bald shortly before 11 AM. Expect the last quarter of mile or so, all of the hike was on the white blazed Appalachian Trial. Although the total elevation gain was close to 1500 feet, most of the climb was very gradual over 4 miles. By 1 PM we were at the base of Siler Bald with only one more uphill climb left up a grassy slope. Although it was a little windy, it was not particularly cold these February day and we stayed at the summit for close to a half hour at lunch. There was not a cloud in the sky and we took many pictures. We then went back on the same route and arrived back at our two cars a little after three. On the way back we stopped at a pizza place in Dillard, right after we crossed back into Georgia.
