Write Up:
Despite a gloomy morning forecast, a drive through the fog near Suches, 7 brave souls gathered at Lake Winfield Scott for a weekend backpacking trip on the West face of Blood Mountain. The hike up Slaughter Creek was steady and uneventful. We found awesome tent pads located about 1/2 mile from the summit, facing the West. After setting up our tents and eating lunch, we ventured to the top of Blood Mountain. We had a lot of company at the top, but it didn't prevent us from enjoying magnificent views in all directions. After a lazy afternoon on the top, we headed back down and fixed dinner, which included anything from hamburgers to curry. After watching the sun set from our tents, we ventured up to the top of the ridge and watched the moon rise. That night, the wind howled and we awoke to temps in the mid-30's with a significant wind chill. But we managed to unfreeze our fingers and take down our tents to complete our loop along the AT and Jarrard Gap trail. It was a great group of people, and I would be remiss if I didn't mention our favorite canine pal, Sally.
