Write Up:

Oh, I wish I had take my camera with me on this hike.  We saw a huge, fat copperhead slowly slithering across the trail at Vickery Creek - - the first snake I've ever seen there.  If completely covered the path, with its head and tail sticking over the edges.  It was certainly over three feet - - and our estimates put it at four.  (Snakes, like fish, grow in the telling.)   We watched it till it was safely (for us) across and went on our rapid way.  Later, we saw a beautiful buck not too far off the trail.  Unlike most wild deer, this one seemed very interested in us and merely stared back as we admired its rack and full body.  It never ran away, but watched us as we reluctantly headed on.

We did exactly 5.0 miles in 1 hour and 30 minutes, finishing with plenty of daylight remaining.  ~  Joyce
