Itinerary:

See things you've never seen before at Kennesaw Mountain National Battlefield Park!  We will be hiking clockwise all the way around the mountain without climbing it.  The entire length of the hike will be about 8.4 miles with a cummulative altitude gain of 1689 ft (over rolling terrain) and a moving pace of about 3 mph, making this a solid D3.  However, I expect us to take over 3 hours since I've built in some time to stop and "sightsee" along the way.

Here are some of the highlights:

- Start at the Burnt Hickory parking lot and head away from the mountain, then take a seldom travelled path through an open field and some woods then across a small creek (with stepping stones).
- Cross back over BH road then hike around the rolling fields on the NW side of the mountain.
- Stop at the 24 gun battery placement from where the union army bombarded the confederates with their rifled cannons.
- Bathroom, water and snack break at the visitor center at about 4 miles.
- Optionally walk down into the quarry on the southeast slope of Kennesaw Mountain from which the Civilian Conservation Corps harvested rock for road and trail construction in the park.  The climb down and up is very steep and a bit overgrown, so if you don't feel safe you can get still get an interesting view from the top.
- See all the ruins of Camp Brumby where 200 young men worked for 6 years during the great depression.
- Cross BH road again and past the ruins of New Salem Church before returning up the main trail back to the cars.

Event Directions:

Here are the directions to the trailhead (Burnt Hickory Parking Lot) west of Marietta, GA.

Going north on I-75 near Marietta, take exit 263 (120 South Loop towards Southern Polytechnic and Marietta).  Follow the 120 South Loop west for about 3 miles to Whitlock Ave.  The "loop" makes a hard right after you cross under the tracks (but you can't miss it).  Then turn left (west) on Whitlock Ave and go about 2.5 more miles. (Whitlock Ave is also known as GA Hwy 120 and Dallas Hwy.)   Turn right (north) on Burnt Hickory Road and go about 1.3 miles.  The parking lot is on the left.
