Join us for a weekend of kayaking and camping in the Hiwassee Scenic River State Park! The Hiwassee River originates on the northwestern slopes of the Blue Ridge Mountains in northern Georgia, and flows northward into North Carolina before turning westward into Tennessee. It is designated as a Tennessee State Scenic River. The river is beautiful, clear and wide, and features class I - II rapids. Known as "Gee Creek", the overnighting portion of the Hiwassee Scenic River State Park lies in a large, wooded flat at the base of Starr Mountain, adjacent to the cold, clear waters of the Hiwassee River. Here we will set up camp, and while we're not on the river, we'll be free to explore the surrounding wilderness area. Gee Creek consists of primitive campsites with picnic tables, fire rings. Water spigots are also available. There is a bath house in the center of the campground with warm showers. Friday after work, we’ll head up to the campsite to pitch our tents, start a bonfire and make smores. Saturday, after breakfast, we’ll drive a short distance to the outfitter and begin our kayaking adventure. NOTE: Due to low water levels, we have reserved sit-on-top kayaks. This trip requires that you are comfortable in and around fast moving water. Beginner or intermediate experience in handling and steering a kayak is recommended. After our trip, we’ll return to camp for a late lunch. The afternoon is free for you to do as you wish - hike, mountain bike, relax along the river. In the evening, we plan on having a steak dinner, campfire, and possibly cards/games. Sunday we will have a light breakfast, pack up and head home. NOTE: Please advise any special food needs. We will accommodate your food needs if advised in advance. NOTE: In an effort to be more environmentally friendly, the AOC will no longer use styrofoam plates or plastic cups on our primitive/pioneer camping events. We will recycle all plastics, bottles and cans during our event. We will provide everyone with reuseable plates, bowls, utensils and wash them during the event. We ask for everyone to bring their own drinking CUP and/or Coffee MUG to wash and reuse during the event. | |||||||
