Petty John's Cave is a karst cave located in Walker County, Georgia on the east side Pigeon Mountain in the Appalachian Plateau of Northwest Georgia. It has a surveyed length of 31,490 ft and reaches a depth of 235 ft. The cave is accessible via a path from a gravel parking area on the side of Rocky Lane. Out of the 242 listed, it is 119th longest cave in the United States as declared by the Georgia Speleological Survey.

Our outfitter is The Georgia Girl Guides, who actually introduced me to AOC a few years ago.  There is a lot of great information on their FAQ page, but I will highlight just a few:

Pettyjohn’s Cave is a physically challenging cave with large piles of rocks and boulders to climb on to get to smaller passages. There are open rooms larger than a house and smaller squeezes less than 2 feet tall.

There are no bathrooms or facilitie s to change clothes at the meeting location, but please bring a change of clothes and a large towel to cover yourself to change after we are through.

The temperature in the cave is 56 degrees.  Expect to get muddy and probably wet.  While our outfitter does not require it, I would discourage wearing cotton as it will remain wet longer resulting in you being colder.  In my experience, synthetic materials, that will dry quickly, are the way too go.

Please do not wear tank tops, shorts, ponchos, baseball hats, water shoes, flat bottomed running shoes, or flip flops. Please leave all jewelry at home. The less you bring with you underground, the better!

Please bring a small pack/drybag for water and snacks as we will stop in the cave for a short break.

Our outfitter will supply helmets, headlamps, knee pads and gloves.  You are welcome to use your own gear if you choose, however, your cost will remain the same as we are getting a group rate.

On the way back to the carpool we may stop in LaFayette for a late lunch/early dinner.  Please check with your carpool driver as to their intentions to stop.

Carpool Cost: Estimated cost per vehicle for this event is $67.20 using a reimbursement rate guideline of $0.400 per mile. The total amount should be divided by the number of people in the vehicle, including the driver. This is a guideline, not a rule, for drivers but the cost should not be higher unless there are extenuating circumstances.
