Itinerary:

Anderson Spring Cave on Pigeon Mtn. This cave starts out with a horizontal stream passage that opens into nice rooms with formations, fossils and gypsum.  Expect to get wet and muddy, we will wading and crawling in the stream and a portion has a low ceiling. We will also visit a passage called the Beauty Parlor (think spa mud bath) Also the water is usually a nippy 58 degrees but with all of the rain it may be slightly colder.  NO cotton, highly recommend synthetics, wool socks and layering. There is a moderate 1 mile hike down to the cave and strenuous return with a steep uphill back to the vehicles.  The cave has ~ 2 miles of passage.  Expect to be underground for ~ 5 hours or more.  First time cavers are welcome if you are in good fitness, enjoy some discomfort, okay in tight spaces, and confident of ability to complete the trip. Plan to see some nice formations, dip into chilly water, get a bit muddy, and use some muscles that are not normally exercised.

Come Prepared!  PLEASE DO NOT expect it is okay to join a caving trip without batteries for your lights, without proper clothing, (No Blue jeans, cotton t-shirts, open-toe shoes, slick sole shoes), or bicycle helmet with duck-taped flashlight.  This is a wild cave, with no rangers, no lighting, and no serious medical assistance for many hours. I will be glad to answer any questions and advise more on what is needed and where to find it.

Required Items to Bring:

Caving or Climbing Helmet with a BRIGHT (75 Lumen or better) Water Resistant Light. Bicycle helmets will NOT do.

At least 2 backup light such as a medium sized 2AA or 3AA Maglight, and extra batteries for your main light

Gloves and Knee pads (soft only, no hard plastic)

Hiking Boots or shoes with a good gripping tread

WE WILL BE GETTING WET! Dress in layers.  Synthetic clothing is best as cotton or cotton blends will hold water and you will be cold.

A small daypack or fanny pack to hold water, snacks (energy bars), a spare light and anything else you wish to bring with you. Ziplock bags are great for keeping items dry. .

At the end of the trip (outside the cave) you will need a change of clothes, a towel and a large plastic bag to contain your dirty/wet clothes for the trip back to the park and ride.

Money for the carpool driver and a good hot meal in LaFayette after caving

Recommended Items to Bring:
Use our Event Checklists to make sure you have everything you need.

Notes:

There has been a lot of rain in this area this spring so there is a possibility of road damage on the WMA property.  If this turns out to be the case then I have alternate destinations in mind.
