Itinerary:

Join me for a past due 20+ mile hike and over 5000 ft of elevation gain, climbing Blood, Slaughter, and Coosa mountains. Our journey will cover both the Blood and Coosa Loops making for a long strenuous day.

Itinerary details:

1. Our journey begins at the Byron Reece parking lot.  We will take the Byron Reece Trail, connect to the AT to our first summit, Blood Mountain.  First 1500 ft of climbing..done.

2. After a quick scenic view from a top Blood Mountain we descend to the junction of the AT and Duncan Ridge trail. Hang a right on the DRT and take a short stroll to the Coosa Loop.

3. Once on the Coosa Loop we begin our short 300 ft. climb to the top of Slaughter Mountain.

4. From Slaughter we have a rapid descent to Wolfpen Gap

5. At Wolfpen Gap we climb about 900 feet to the top of Coosa Bald.

6. The next few miles are an easy downhill  till we make our way up Frady Mountain about 700 ft.

7. Descend to Vogel State Park and continue up a long 1700 ft strenuous climb of the Coosa loop till we reach the DRT intersect. Our starting point on the Coosa Loop.

8. Take a left onto the Duncan Ridge Trail towards Blood Mountain. Following the trail till we reach the 3 way intersection of the DRT and AT.

9. Turn right onto the Appalachian Trail and continue until reaching the Freeman Trail.

10. Take a left on the seldom used Freeman trail till the At and Byron Reece trail. Continue on the Byron Reece Trail back down to the trail head and our cars.

We will plan to hike for 10 hours  with stops for lunch, water refill and snacks  breaks but the event may go longer depending on pace. This does not include the travel time!
