Itinerary:

Are you ready to take on a tough long distance D5?  Then this could be the perfect mountain hike for you.  This 14 mile loop starts in Cheaha State Park on the Cave Creek Trail, and then connects with the Pinhoti Trail in the Talladega National Forest for the return trip. There is a variety of flora, fauna, rock formations, and scenery (including the wrackage of a plane crash from 1972). The first part of the loop is flat and rocky while the Pinhoti side of the loop has a couple of great overlooks. We'll also take a very challenging steep side-trek down to and back up from the Turnipseed Campground (where there are pit toilets). Parts of the hike cross challenging boulder fields, so appropriate hiking boots and poles are highly recommended. We'll stop for snacks/light lunch at one of the overlooks on the trail. Total elevation gain for the entire hike will be approx. 2,500' - so while this is a great hike for those ready to try a D5, it is definitely NOT a hike for beginners.

If you are driving to the event, please realize you'll need to meet us at the Cheaha State Park at 8:15 AM Central time!  But I highly recommend riding along with the carpool as it is just over an hour drive and so much fun!

Once we return to Villa Rica we'll stop by Evan's Bar-B-Que for an incredible meal!

Carpool Cost: Estimated cost per vehicle for this event is $52.80 using a reimbursement rate guideline of $0.400 per mile. The total amount should be divided by the number of people in the vehicle, including the driver. This is a guideline, not a rule, for drivers but the cost should not be higher unless there are extenuating circumstances.

Notes:

If you are planning on bringing a dog, please understand we will be covering almost 15 miles with some of these miles through a boulder and large rock field.  Your dog should already be able to hike long distance hikes and be able to handle challenging terrain.  I may contact you about your dog if we have not done a long-distance hike together.
